Joe is a recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economics (2001) and the John Bates Clark Medal (1979). He is a former Chief Economist of the World Bank and a former Chairman of the US president’s Council of Economic Advisers. Joe founded the Initiative for Policy Dialogue (IPD), co-chairs the Committee on Global Thought at Columbia University. He also chairs the University of Manchester’s Brooks World Poverty Institute.
